Glaucoma is a term that refers to a group of eye conditions characterized by damage to the optic nerve, which is essential for vision. This damage is often associated with increased intraocular pressure (pressure within the eye). The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain, and when it becomes damaged, it can result in vision loss. There are different types of glaucoma, but the two main categories are open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma.
Open-Angle Glaucoma: This is the most common form of glaucoma. It develops gradually over time, and the drainage angle between the cornea and iris remains open, but the drainage channels within the eye become less efficient. This leads to an increase in intraocular pressure, causing damage to the optic nerve.
Angle-Closure Glaucoma: This type is less common but can be more acute. It occurs when the iris is too close to the drainage angle, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. This can cause symptoms such as severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision.
